D-Day Battle... Part 1

The Germans were defending with one grenadier platoon with seven teams, a heavy platoon with three machine guns and a battery of four 10.5's. There was a pilbox with a 5.5cm gun, two 7.5cm nests and two machine gun nests. Ugh... the poor Americans were looking down the barrel of five MG42's.... thats 30 shots a turn *eep!*

The preliminary bombardment was reletively unaffective, only taking out one stand of German infantry.

On the first turn the US managed to get three out of four assault platoons and three out of five DD Shermans onto the beach. Not too bad to start with.....

Alas, they only managed to take out one machine gun nest...

The German machine gun fire whittled away at the infantry while their artillery pinned two platoons on the beach and destroyed one of the Sherman tanks.

Turn 2 saw the arrival of two more assault platoons and one more DD Sherman in the second wave. Two Shermans made their way up the draw onto the mainland wiping out some poorly placed barb wire entanglements. (I had a talk with my opponent after the game and we both agreed that his static defenses were in the wrong place) The infantry rushed to the shingle to get some cover from the machine gun fire.

German artillery and machine gun fire took a toll on the Americans this turn....

The third wave was delayed, only a small recon element found its way to the beaches. The Shermans made their way toward the German defenses bouncing anti-tank rounds off their armored hulls.

The infantry took another pounding from the artillery as they funneled their way off the beach.
